Grief Counseling in Minneapolis
By Lisa Cryns, LMFT
Find Compassionate Support for Grief & Loss
Grief is one of the hardest experiences we go through and one of the most deeply human. Yet our culture often encourages us to “stay strong” or “get back to normal” far sooner than we’re ready.
At Lisa Cryns Therapy, I believe that grief isn’t something to fix or push through. It’s something to feel, honor, and move through at your own pace. I provide grief counseling in Minneapolis and virtual therapy throughout Minnesota to support you as you navigate the emotional, physical, and relational impacts of loss.
What Is Grief Counseling?
Grief counseling provides a safe, supportive space to understand and process your loss. Whether it’s the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, a major life transition, a health diagnosis, or the loss of a life you imagined.
Grief can show up in many ways:
- sadness or overwhelm
- anger or irritability
- numbness or disconnection
- guilt or regret
- physical fatigue or brain fog
- relief, confusion, or emotional contradiction
These responses aren’t signs of weakness. They’re signs that what you lost mattered.
As a grief therapist, my role is to help you make sense of these emotions, feel supported in them, and gently move toward healing and integration.
Why Avoiding Grief Makes Healing Harder
Many people cope with loss by keeping busy, minimizing their emotions, or telling themselves it could be worse. These strategies can protect you temporarily, but over time they can create:
- Emotional numbness: avoiding sadness can also dull joy
- Physical symptoms: tension, headaches, chronic stress, fatigue
- Disconnection from others: especially those who are also grieving
- Prolonged suffering: unprocessed grief doesn’t go away. It waits.
You don’t have to face those feelings alone. Grief counseling offers a space where your emotions can be witnessed, validated, and understood.
How Grief Counseling Helps
Feeling your grief does not mean drowning in pain. It means allowing your experience to move through you in a way that creates space for healing, meaning, and resilience.
In grief therapy, we will work together to help you:
1. Acknowledge and Name the Loss
Recognizing what has changed and what it meant to you.
2. Process Emotions Safely
Therapy creates room for any emotion you carry: sadness, anger, guilt, relief, confusion, or all of the above.
3. Support Both Body and Mind
Grief affects your nervous system and physical health. We’ll explore how your body carries grief and use grounding strategies to reduce overwhelm.
4. Reclaim Emotional Energy
Unprocessed grief takes up mental and emotional space. As you work through it, you free up energy for joy, connection, and creativity.
5. Integrate Meaning
With time, therapy helps transform grief from painful to bittersweet by helping you carry it in a way that feels lighter.
What to Expect in Sessions
Each session is tailored to your needs and your pace. Together, we will:
- explore your grief story with compassion
- understand the emotions and physical sensations you’re experiencing
- identify coping patterns that may be keeping you stuck
- process your loss in a way that feels gentle and manageable
- build tools for grounding, resilience, and emotional regulation
- reconnect with meaning, purpose, and hope
There is no timeline for grief. Your process is your own and I’m here to walk alongside you, not push you through it.
